Early Autumn 2008 PARISH VISITOR

During the early autumn there are many opportunities to participate in walks, ministry programs, and worship services that address many developmental and health issues and other needs.

October is Disability Awareness Month. On October 4, we have an opportunity to participate in the Buddy Walk of South Plainfield (by walking and/or donating) in support of those with Down Syndrome. October 19 is a day many in our area will be walking at Woodbridge Center for a cure for breast cancer.  The first week in October is designated by NAMI (National Alliance on mental Illness) as Mental Illness Awareness week. We are in the process here at All Saints’ of putting together a program on depression for later in October that will provide education, support, and candlelighting and prayer for those persons or families whose lives have been impacted by some form of mental illness.  We will keep you posted.  I am sure that you are aware of many more efforts taking place this fall to address other health issues as well.

In worship on Sunday, October 5th, with the Blessing of Animals, we pray for the welfare and healing of other portions of the creation often forgotten about as we focus on our many human needs. We will pray, not only for the pets who give us so much affection, but also for other animals and the environment that suffer dis-ease often because of human neglect. On Sunday, October 12, the Sunday preceding St. Luke’s Day, we will again offer the opportunity for prayers and the laying on of hands and anointing for healing for those in need in body, mind, and spirit. (And who isn’t?)

With brothers and sisters in faith we will participate in this year’s Piscataway-Dunellen Area CROP Walk on Sunday, October 26th, to help alleviate hunger and work for more sustainable lifestyles for the poorest of the poor around the world. All Saints’ will again serve as the halfway refreshment point for walkers.

Every aspect of the mission of Jesus Christ carried out now in faithful imitation of his own earthly ministry is about healing and wholeness.  Each celebration of Holy Communion has at its center the healing presence of Jesus Christ who heals through the process of reconciliation with the forgiveness of sin and renewal of relationships (It is this aspect of healing that is lifted up especially on Reformation Sunday with its focus on the cross of Jesus Christ and the grace of God poured out on sinners for his sake alone), and who heals through the church’s prayers and hands on service to the sick, the hungry, the poor, and the grieving.  We also minister in Christ’s name and in the power of the Spirit when we are motivated to give our offerings of money, time, donations of food, and participate in events like those I have outlined above.

Worship, where the Lord’s ministry to us and our commitment to him for the life of the world meet, also points us to that extreme healing, that ultimate form of salvation that is eternal life. That is our focus on All Saints’ Sunday, when we remember all the saints “who from their labors rest,” and as the season after Pentecost draws to a close on Christ the King, the Last Sunday of the Church Year, with its focus on the hope for and promise of the fulfillment of God’s vision for God’s people and the whole of creation--life in God’s Kingdom come, where no dis-ease of any kind can exist at all.

This autumn is a time to remember all that God has done, is doing, and promises to do.  It is also a time to recommit ourselves to following behind Jesus, seeking to understand more fully what it means to live under the Cross and applying that understanding to our congregational and personal lives.

This year All Saints’ Sunday is observed on November 2nd.  Once again we will include in the Prayers the names of those persons who have died especially since All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1), 2007.  Please submit names you would like to have included by writing them on the special prayer sheet that will be available during October in the narthex.  You may also contact Pastor Larson in the office (732-463-1510) or by e-mail:  pastorlarson@verizon.net).

Altar Flowers
There are a number of Sundays still open in 2008 to place altar flowers. The cost per bouquet is $15.00.  Sign up on the sheet in the narthex. Be sure to indicate the dedication you wish to appear in the weekly worship materials.  Place your payment in and envelope and mark it “altar flowers for ________(date),” being sure to provide your name or offering envelope number for proper recording.

Global Missions - Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Dear All Saints’ Lutheran Church,

Global Mission is at the heart of the ELCA’s ministry in the world.  We are deeply grateful that you, as a past supporter of select ELCA global ministries, know this and have, through your support, been key in ensuring that the church remains true to its calling to share the love of Christ throughout the world.
On this day, I am writing to share with you a great challenge which the church now faces as it seeks to be true to this calling.  A weakened economy in the United States has also weakened the strength of the US dollar abroad.  In early 2008, the value of the dollar dropped to an all-time low against the European Euro as well as most other international currencies.  Since 2002, the dollar has declined about 45 percent against the Euro, the currency to which many other currencies are tied, and nearly 15 percent in the past year alone.
“Though the exchange rate has always posed a problem in a couple of countries, the issue is now almost universal,” said Santiago Padilla, assistant director for finance in ELCA Global Mission.
What does this mean for the church’s global mission?  Ultimately, this could mean that – without increased support – fewer projects and missionaries will be fully funded.
I invite you to help strengthen the global ministry of the church in this challenging time by making a gift “above and beyond” the generous support you have already provided for the global mission of this church.  I ask that you please consider making a gift of &75 which will help our church rise to the challenge of maintaining its missionary service in the coming year.

Vacation Bible School 2008:
Friendship Trek
We went on five daily hikes, August 4-8, to learn about Jesus our Forever Friend and how we can best be friends of Jesus by taking care of each other.  Each day 32 trekkers met at Friendship Summit and then went off in groups with their Trail Guides to explore Campfire Bible Stories, participate in a daily Bible Challenge, play Survivor Games, enjoy Backpack Snacks, sing Campfire Songs, and make Wilderness Crafts.  Along the way, we met Raya Raccoon, Honey Bear, Buddy the Porcupine, Baldwin Eagle, and Rocky Ram. A great time was had by all!  Many thanks to our staff and to all who made Vacation Bible School 2008 ministry possible through offerings of money and refreshments, our VBS families and members of All Saints’.  See the note below about how we shared the Good News of Jesus our Forever Friend.

2008 VBS Offerings Service Project:  L.A.M.P.

This years’ VBS offerings were given to the Lutheran Association of Missionary Pilots (L.A.M.P.), who carry the Gospel throughout the northern most reaches of North America.  VBS students were encouraged to bring a daily offering for this important ministry.  Congregation members were invited to contribute as well.  At the end of VBS our total offerings of $115.16 were forwarded to L.A.M.P.  Thank you for your support!

Sunday Church School and Adult Bible Study

Our regular classes for those age 3 - adults resumed on September 14th.  Classes meet from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. The adult study and discussion group meets in the Social Hall.  It’s not too late!  Join in at any time! Bring family and friends!

Confirmation Planning Meeting
A planning meeting for Confirmation instruction during this school year will be held on Sunday evening, September 28th, at 7 p.m.  Enrolling students (those in grade 7 or above) and at least one parent should attend.  Please bring school calendars to aid our schedule planning.

 SERVICE (SOCIAL MINISTRY) NEWS:

Mental Illness Awareness
Here are a few statistics you may find surprising:

1 in 4 families are affected by mental illnesses
25% of all beds in our hospitals are filled by persons with mental illness
More than half of the nation’s jail and prison inmates suffer from mental health problems
35% of persons who are homeless on city streets suffer from schizophrenia
15% of all Americans will suffer a major depressive episode during their lifetime; less than 1/3 will receive any treatment
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death overall in America.  It is the 3rd leading cause of death for young Americans between 10-24.  It is the 2nd leading cause of death for American college students. Suicides outnumber homicides by 3 to 2.  There are more suicides globally than deaths from war and violence combined.  Approximately twice as many Americans die by suicides than from HIV/AIDS.  More than 90% of people who die by suicide have depression or another diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder.

Include in your prayers this month persons suffering from mental illness and their families.  Watch for more information on a special program being planned at All Saints’ in late October on depression disorders. The date and time will be announced soon. As the closing part of that program, we will hold a candlelighting and offer prayers for all persons and families who are affected by mental illnesses.

Walk to Make a Difference!

Buddy Walk of South Plainfield –
Saturday, October 4, Putnam Park

Join other members and friends as a walker or plan now to support walker.  Be part of Gracie’s Gang!  Gracie’s Gang will walk under the pennant and as buddies of All Saints’ member Grace Hurley.  We will join other teams who are walking to raise awareness and funds for research and to promote acceptance for persons with Down Syndrome.

The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote acceptance and awareness.  In 1995 there were 17 walks; now there are more than 260 walks held across the country and around the world.  In 2007, the Buddy Walks raised over $9.5 million to benefit national education, research and advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs and services.

The Buddy Walk is a one-mile advocacy walk.  The Buddy Walk of South Plainfield will be held on Saturday, October 4, rain or shine, at Putnam Park located off Oak Tree Avenue in South Plainfield.  Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. and the Walk begins at 1:00 p.m.  Lunch and refreshments and T-shirts will be provided for pre-registered walkers.

Packets of information with registration forms and donation collection sheets are available for pick-up in the church narthex.  To register online as part of the Gracie’s Gang Team as a walker or to donate, please go to http://www.buddywalk.kintera.org/bwosp or contact Lauren Hurley.

Help support the more than 350,000 persons with Down Syndrome in the United States.  Checks for registration fees or donations should be made payable to “Central NJ DS PAG.”  Last year, Gracie’s Gang raised the second highest amount of donations in the Buddy Walk of South Plainfield.  Invite you friends to participate with you.

Sunday, October 26

Once again All Saints’ will participate in the local CROP Walk for Church World Service.  Christ United Methodist will host and All Saints’ will serve as the mid-point refreshment and rest stop.  Plan now to walk or support an All Saints’ walker.  We will need donations of juice boxes, water bottles, and nutritious snacks (fruit, nuts, granola bars, etc.)  Please bring items to the church kitchen.  Registration materials and collection packets will be available soon.  Please watch for more information.

Lutheran Disaster Response in the Eye of 2008 Hurricane Season

September 2, 2008 
     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) are responding in the aftermath of tropical storms and hurricanes, waiting to assess the damage of Hurricane Gustav and preparing for the remainder of the 2008 hurricane season.  "We are in difficult days," said the Rev. Kevin A. Massey, director, Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR).
     "It is important for us all to stay in close communication with each other, to remain deeply in prayer for the needs of people both already affected and potentially affected, and especially to consider giving to the work of Lutheran Disaster Response," he said.  LDR is a collaborative ministry of the ELCA
and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
     Hurricane Gustav made landfall Sept. 1 on the Louisiana Gulf Coast.  "We appreciate Bishop Michael Rinehart and the leadership of the ELCA Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod and Bishop Julian
Gordy and the ELCA Southeastern Synod for the excellent job they are doing in responding to this disaster," Massey said.  The synods have maintained communication with pastors and other church leaders who evacuated their homes, he said.
     "The good thing about many people getting out and being evacuated is that they were safe.  It will take some time, as they return slowly to their homes, for us to learn more and more about the needs of the people in the Gulf area," Massey said. "It may take many weeks before we are able to identify the ways
that volunteers will be able to help."  "Whether tropical storms or hurricanes, we're seeing an
incredible impact across the country," Massey said.  "It is a reminder that we are all in this together.  The whole country is being affected and, as we've done before, we will all work together to respond."
     Hurricane Dolly struck Texas on July 23.  "We're still working in areas around there," Massey said.
     "Tropical Storm Fay had a significant impact on parts of Florida," he said.  "Lutheran Disaster Response Team Florida has been doing a great job responding with our partners in Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the ELCA Florida-Bahamas Synod.
We've been helping coordinate production of flood buckets that people are able to use to help clean out their own homes."  "Areas of Florida are very wet, and there is standing water in many places," Massey said.  "With the threat of additional storms, it is a very scary time."  Lutherans across the church are "very aware that many storms can affect us in the days and weeks to come," he said.  "Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to be a hurricane when it will reach the
eastern seaboard of the United States somewhere between Georgia and the Carolinas, possibly as early as this Friday.  Tropical Storms Ike and Josephine are forming in the Atlantic."
     "There is great leadership in all of our synods, and we appreciate the work they have already done in preparing," Massey said.  LDR staff will continue to be in conversation with them
this week, he said. "We will seek to provide help and healing to people affected by these storms, and we ask for people to consider giving.

The Heifer Gift Ark Fund of All Saints’
                    
Hunger and sustainable livelihoods are growing needs.  Delegates from 53 nations and representatives from 1200 non-governmental organizations recently met at the United Nations for the Annual Meeting of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) to discuss agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa.  The meetings marked the first time in 25 years that global leaders have closely examined agriculture as a tool for alleviating hunger and poverty.  Much of the discussion centered on the world food price crisis that officials say has pushed 100 million more people deeper into poverty and hunger.  According to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, the current crisis “has highlighted the fragility of our success in feeding the world’s growing population with the technologies of the first green revolution and subsequent agricultural improvements. …Productivity growth has been slowing down for some time. Soils are becoming depleted and less fertile, water is growing scarcer in many places, and good agricultural land is being lost to other uses and to degradation.  Public investments in agriculture, including donor support, have been on a downward trend.”

The Heifer Project’s work involves providing livestock, trees, training and other resources to help small-scale farm families and communities become more self-reliant.  Heifer’s more than 60 years of experience shows that agriculture can be a pathway out of poverty and hunger for the world’s poor.

Building Fund Appeal Support

As the property sale steps continue, your special offerings for the Building Fund Appeal are needed more then ever!  Please give beyond your three-year commitment to see us through this critical stage in our progress!  Ways to give:
-  An offering with your regular Sunday offering
-  A Special Major Gift at any time.  Major gifts will be especially helpful now as we navigate toward refinancing at the five-year mark.  Special gifts to the Building Fund may be made in celebration of various life events, in honor of loved ones, in memory of loved ones, or just to say “thank you” to God for blessings received.
- Building Use Donations:  Donations from use of our Social Hall for your family or outside group events are added to our Building Fund. Please consider using our Social Hall for family celebrations (birthdays, showers, Baptism parties, etc.).  Please share the news about the availability of our space with others you know.  For more information about donations for building use, please speak with any Council Member or with Pastor Larson.

Council News
During the summer, the Council met on July 20th, August 17th, and September 14th attended other meetings related to property sale and finances.  Here is a summary of Council business:
+ Heard reports of regular ministry programs, including Vacation Bible School
+ Planned for fall fundraisers: Entertainment Books, Wildtree Herbs, and Avon Products, and Miracle Sunday 2 on December 14th.
+ Met with Synod Treasurer Tom Kull and, along with Tom Kull, met with our to review potential bids for property sale. The congregation will be informed as the process unfolds and decisions must be made.

Memorial Fund
Recent gifts to the Memorial Fund have been received in loving memory of:

Thanks for the Ministry!

Yes, the lawn is being cut regularly. We finally got the riding mower repaired, but not before Ravi Mohanlall and Charles Kleinberg spent hours with their small power mowers trying to keep the property from reverting to a field!  Since the mower was repaired our thanks are due to Bev and Tom Bolger, and also Charles Kleinberg, Ravi Mohanlall, and John Larson for keeping the property tidy.  Thank you so much!

Thank you as well to those who have been providing some volunteer office assistance for Pastor.  They are Barbara Grover, Charles Kleinberg, and Lois McLeer.  Barbara Panebianco lends a hand with tax reporting throughout the year. Their assistance has been greatly appreciated by Pastor and the Council.

Thank you to Lois McLeer and the Kleinbergs for donating one day of quality work by their very handy relative who made various repairs to the old bathrooms and the trash dumpster enclosure gate.  Thank you to all!

And thank you to you, too, for all that you do!

Fall Fundraising at All Saints’

2009 Entertainment Books are still available in the Office for $25.00 per book.  There is a sample book in the narthex.  If you have questions about this project, please speak with Gail Zimmer. Although they are marked as for 2009, the books are usable now.  They make great gifts.

The Wildtree Herbs fundraiser will kick off on Sunday, October 12.  Come to a tasty sampling of food products during coffee hours following both services.  These will be hosted by CarolLee Perko and Gail Zimmer.  Pick up your packet with catalog and order forms and share your enthusiasm for these all-natural, preservative-free, low salt and low sugar food products.  Return your orders no later than Sunday, November 2, with payments.  Checks should be made payable to All Saints’ Lutheran Church.  Merchandise will be ready for pick up two weeks after our completed order is submitted and paid.  These products are healthier alternatives for family consumption and also make great gifts—something to keep in mind for the holidays.
